There are some great parts of life as an independent software developer. The greatest is probably the close relationship you develop with those core users who support you, especially those early adopters who have been with your business since the beginning. It is also nice to follow one’s dreams and to craft great software that you believe in. As a truly independent developer, you can create a product for any use in any industry, which is a great, empowering feeling.

The toughest part of developing software, though, isn’t developing it—the toughest part is selling it, by far. It is just so incredibly hard to get your software out there, in front of users who might need it, and fully explain what it can do.

In Twit Menulet’s case, surprisingly, I can’t seem to get the word out that we support Lists! Frankly, List support is easy, so I’m surprised that not every client supports lists. In fact, many clients still don’t, and many of our users choose Twit Menulet because we fully support Lists. I think Lists are great, they expose me to a lot of new Twitter users, and I wouldn’t use a client that didn’t support Lists.

This blog post is really just another attempt to get the word out. Just for fun, though, here is a table showing the status of List support in various clients:

Client

List support?

Twit Menulet

YES!

Babble

NO

Kiwi

NO

Tototl

NO

Let’s hear it, folks! Which other Twitter clients have you tried that do—or don’t—support Lists?

We have just released Twit Menulet version 7.2, featuring a host of improvements and new capabilities. These include:

Proper handling of “native” retweets. These retweets are now incorporated into the tweetstream as they should be. The avatars for these retweets are marked with a special icon.

Global hotkeys! This is an oft-requested feature that was sorely needed. What a pleasure! Hit Opt-command-down arrow to check the tweetstream at any time. Opt-command-left arrow toggles display of scrolling text, which some people find distracting. Opt-command-right arrow opens the “Send a tweet” panel. This hotkey alone has improved my workflow enormously, as I can copy a bit of text in my browser, jump to the send panel with my hotkey, paste the text, and rapidly send.

Bylines and time stamps on all tweets (space permitting). These are nice to have. I think that our implementation is suitably restrained–but if you don’t like the bylines, a new preference item allows you to turn them off.

An improved, toolbar-based preference panel. A major improvement over the tab view we used to sport!

Auto-navigation to last tweet. This feature will send you back to the last tweet with which you interacted, on next opening the menu. This feature has saved me a lot of paging through menus in recent days.

Stability improvements. We added quite a few of these, and I now run Twit Menulet routinely for more than a week at a time.

With these improvements, Twit Menulet is already a truly full-featured Twitter client for Mac. The next round of improvements will include support for reading RSS streams, tear-off menus, and more. I may actually give in and create a standard tweet window as an alternative to our menu-only approach. If there are additional features you’d like to see in our next version, then chime in quickly by e-mail to phil [AT] twitmenulet.com. Or reach us on Twitter at @stockmenulet.

We’ve just released Twit Menulet version 7 with support for Twitter Lists! Tweets from Lists are integrated into your river-of-tweets and displayed in the menu bar along with other tweets. Lists to which you subscribe are automatically discovered and displayed in Twit Menulet; deleting the list from Twit Menulet also unsubscribes you in your Twitter account.

In Twit Menulet, Lists achieve a status that is similar to that of accounts. You can choose to view only tweets from a certain list, or to filter tweets from that list temporarily. Twit Menulet, however, can also display Lists that are unmoored from any Twitter account; that is, you can enter a List specifier without entering any Twitter account information and the List will be displayed. This capability points the way to an eventual strategy for offering branded versions of Twit Menulet that come pre-loaded with Lists of interest to a company’s customers.

We hope you will enjoy Twit Menulet’s new capabilities!

Twit Menulet is a powerful, Mac-native Twitter client that displays tweets in a scrolling “ticker”. Click the menu to see the whole tweet stream, to visit links, or to post your own tweets. Twit Menulet is designed for Twitter users who like to stay connected, but who use their computers constantly for other tasks. Browser-based and Adobe AIR-based applications require their users to focus entirely on Twitter. Twit Menulet acts instead like a continuous news ticker, keeping you up-to-date without ruining your concentration.

Despite its small footprint, Twit Menulet is feature-rich and will satisfy power users and novices alike. Twit Menulet organizes tweets into threaded conversations, allows multiple accounts, and provides a special “long tweet” format permitting tweets over 140 characters.

As a Twitter developer (my product, Twit Menulet, is here), I’ve often been asked what I think is the “best” Twitter client for Mac. And, in fact, a significant minority of folks searching for twitter clients include the word “best” in their search. Look at this Google Trends graph comparing searches for “twitter client” and “best twitter client”:

Search for "twitter client" vs. "best twitter client"

I have to admit that searching for the “best” Twitter client makes some sense at first blush. Indeed, I myself have occasionally searched for the “best” software of one sort or another. However, as the developer of a very carefully targeted product, I must say that I’ve come to abhor the generic, unconstrained question of which software is “best”. It turns out that the “best” software for a given purpose depends very much on who will be the user of that software.

Let’s take two examples:

Syrinx is an extraordinarily simple, free client. One account is allowed, and the tweets are displayed in a list. That’s pretty much it. You can send tweets by entering the text in a box and pressing enter (note that, as far as I can tell, <return> characters aren’t allowed in the tweets themselves).

I think that Syrinx is OK for cheapskates and first timers. It is the minimal possible functional client. For power-users and Twitter addicts, though, it is literally worthless because the interface is no better than the normal online Twitter interface. On the other hand, we get a lot of users migrating from Syrinx, so this is why I say that Syrinx is reasonable for “first timers”—folks who have never used a client before. Syrinx may introduce these people to the idea of a client, and may get them thinking about the possibilities.

Twit Menulet (my favorite!) is a powerful client with a revolutionary interface. Multiple accounts are allowed, and the tweets are displayed in a River-of-News format, most recent first. Powerful as it is, though, we’ve taken some tough design decisions with Twit Menulet. These decisions mean that a user must sometimes know exactly what he or she wants in order to find it. Following a user, for example, is somewhat counter-intuitive…one must first search for the user, then click on one of their tweets to follow.

In short, Twit Menulet is probably not for newbies. Most of our users have several Twitter acounts, and many use another client in addition to Twit Menulet. Most of them use Twit Menulet as a background monitor, then use global hotkeys to pull the app to the front on demand. Furthermore, Twit Menulet is a for-pay app, which means that the user needs to consider Twitter important enough to be worth spending a few bucks on. This is a different kind of user than the Syrinx user.

In summary, the “best” Twitter client for you is going to change over time. You’ll want different things now than you do later. If you use Twit Menulet, though, I promise that we’ll listen to your needs and try to change with you over time.
